The Maniototo Region

The Maniototo Region is found in Central Otago bounded by the Dunstan and Hawdun Ranges.  It is reached either by turning inland at Palmerston and threading one’s way up the Shag Valley to reach the inland plateau of the Maniototo (the Pig Root), or following the Manuherikia River from Alexandra to reach the St Bathans area.  Heading East from there will pass you over the ridges and valleys formed by the ends of the Raggedy Range, Rough Ridge, and the Rock and Pillar Range – eroded examples of an ancient mountain system. This is also the region through which the famed Central Otago Rail Trail threads its way.
